OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAmazing views of the Glasshouse Mountains across rolling green hills, speckled with typical trees and glimpses of the Pumice Stone Passage dwarfed by giant fluffy clouds waited to be drawn.

The hosts generously offered us coffee before we started and we accepted the offer gratefully.
Some had come quite a distance, and besides the joy of a warm drink its always pleasant to have a quick catch up before we crack open the Art Materials.

No one can predict what the weather will be like lately so we weren’t sure what the April Sunday Art Session at the Big Barrel Winery near Maleny would bring…

We had been assured that if the heavens opened up there was plenty of shelter available…as long as we could pack up quickly and run for cover, we were sweet. As it turned out though, we had a few spot of rain as we were packing up, thats all.

Within our reach were beautifully perfumed Magnolias, pretty Camellias, sculptural Agave, interesting pathways and trimmed hedges with weaving perspectives begging to be noted.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASome of us opted to explore the vineyard and marvel at its powerful dormancy. Although in hibernation it was easy to see the remnants of last years crop and sense the potential of the harvest it would bring. The undulating land with its rows and rows of rambling vines hugging the wires that support and shape them merged into a flexible crate that deepened the sense of movement and shape of the hills. Looking across some of the lower vines through widely spaced tall gum sentinels out across the mountains was magical, layers of natures plantings create distance and wonder…

An ‘Artists Party’ refreshments station had kindly been set up in the corner of the Barrel for us to partake when we wanted, although most went wandering and planned only on returning to the base when we had planned to stop at 1.

The weather had warmed and cleared and time had flown, apart from the constant stream of visitors to this iconic spot, all taking place somewhere outside that realm of Art, a sense rather than an intrusion, packing up came around all to quickly. A few hours of drawing and marvelling, thinking and squinting, adjusting and painting rounded up as we meandered back into the Big Barrel for a bite to eat and some heady wine.

Many smiles and much joy accompanied us as we entered to find a sensational spread of cheese platters adorned with fruits and nuts, scrumptious nibbles and rich sumptuous wines set up for our feast.

Really! This was too much! The Big Barrel had been on my list of places to visit for ages and not sure what to expect, it exceeded all expectations! Great location with exceptional views, quality produce and flawless service, comfortable facilities in beautiful surroundings…what more could you want?
We are most grateful to the hosts for one of the best Sunday Art Sessions ever…
